My son and I have just started reading the Harry Potter series too. We are on book 2 and love it. He doesn't read it by himself yet as he goes to school in French (grade 1 too) and his English reading has yet to catch up.
frances loves her h.p., and she is helping me read it to her. however, my heart belongs to madeleine l'engle, and good old laura ingalls wilder. we listen to "a wrinkle in time" on cd (on car trips) as read by l'engle herself, and it's amazing.

And what a WONDERFUL book to be reading. My girls love those books, and Frances is quite a good reader to be enjoying Potter in the first grade. WOW!
